Are the controls in games from Playstation Plus' classics catalogs broken?

I have recently been trying out some of the games in Playstation Plus' classics catalog, and while I was excited to relive some childhood nostalgia, I found the controls to be a lot harder than I remember. I tried out Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which was originally on the PS1, and I'm not sure if it's the PS5 controller, an old port running on modern technology, or something else, but it feels like driving a car without power steering.
